CHAPTER SEVEN

Home

YACOUBA

WITH EVERYTHING THAT had been going on, Jasmine’s parents still wanted to have a get together. It was originally intended for her promotion, but we had to pivot and just call it a gathering. Family from both sides were coming through and despite me wanting to have it catered so no one had to work, I was vetoed. I paid for the ingredients that would be needed, and Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham invited my family as well.

I remembered her father from that bullshit ass engagement dinner I interrupted. I knew that nigga couldn’t stand David, and I wondered if that extended to all of his daughter’s boyfriends, or if it was just David he couldn’t stand.

Mr. Cunningham didn’t look shit like Jasmine besides them, sharing the same skin tone. Her hair was a dark russet red, where his was dark brown. His eyes were just as assessing as hers were, and I knew she got her shrewdness from him. Her mama was still her clone, and I was pleased to watch how she moved toward me with openness. Her daddy was still watching me like a hawk though, so I couldn’t check out his wife like I wanted. Seeing her was like looking at Jazzy in twenty years and I was even more resolute about keeping her by my side.

After she embraced her daughter, she turned to me with a smile. “Yacouba.”

“Yes, Mrs. Cunningham, how are you?” We’d had a few meetings and dinners, but nothing like this before. The last time I’d seen them, I’d been getting Jasmine out of jail. With work for all of us, it had been hard the last four months to spend the quality time together that I’d wanted. They were out for the summer now and I wanted to ensure we changed that.

“I’m blessed, son. How are you holding up?” She had the same motherly vibe that my mom did and I couldn’t help but smile at her. She was being sweet, but I’d seen her mama bear in action.

“I have no complaints, Mrs. Cunningham.” I handed over the gift bag with the present I’d purchased for them. Her eyes lit up as she took the bag from me with questioning eyes and an easy smile.

“And what’s this?”

“Jasmine told me how you like to relax with a good bottle of wine, so I got you a new set of custom wine glasses, along with a subscription to a wine club.”

“Custom?” Her brows rose, and I swore this woman cloned Jasmine. She even had her mannerisms.

“They are. 24 carat—”

“Plated!” She gasped as though having gold plated wine glasses was being too extravagant. Apparently, that humility was hereditary. Just like Jasmine had to learn, so would her mama.

“Solid. Don’t play me future mother-in-law. I’d never plate anything I’m giving to my family. That includes you.” There were a dozen wine glasses, and each stem was solid gold. Etched in the middle of each were her mom and dad’s initials, followed by their wedding date.
